DARIEN — Police have arrested four people who tried to use counterfeit $100 bills to buy wine, chocolate and pet goods in Connecticut.

The Stamford Advocate reports that police recovered $3,300 in counterfeit bills during the arrest in Westport last weekend.

Police were notified to the counterfeit bills after one person tried to buy pet goods in Darien around 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

An investigation revealed one person successfully passed a $100 bill and two others unsuccessfully tried to pass bills at nearby chocolate and wine stores.

Police say the bills left behind had matching serial numbers, confirming they were counterfeit.

Authorities located the suspects around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Three are from New York City, and one is from Newark, New Jersey. They all face forgery and conspiracy charges.
