VERNON – Dust to dust. Sacred Heart Church has stood empty for over 20 years, but residents still came out to say goodbye to the church that has been an icon to its community.
The Roman Catholic Church was condemned and shut down back in 1997 due to structural issues and leaks, forcing the parish to relocate.
After closing its property on 550 Hartford Turnpike, Sacred Heart Church merged with St. Bernard in Rockville.
A local resident said his uncle was a part of the church’s original construction crew and didn’t believe the building would last long.
“In his opinion, it wouldn't really last because bad weather conditions, the weather changes so quickly up here and concrete tends to absorb water and crack” Andrew Baltronis said.
The vacant church was also known by some as the “cement tent” and had been targeted by vandals in recent years.
In January, four suspects were arrested for attempting to break into the church.
The property has been put up for sale by the diocese and owners are hoping it will sell fast now that the building has been torn down.
It is currently on the market for $900,000.
