HARTFORD– A group of Connecticut lawmakers is pushing to include higher taxes on the wealthy in the next state budget.

Members of the General Assembly’s Progressive Democratic Caucus are seeking a large enough increase in personal income tax for top earners so they pay “the same total effective rate as low- and middle-income families.”

The income tax change is among a list of proposals released by the caucus, which numbers about 45 lawmakers. The group also supports marijuana legalization.

While Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont did not include any changes to the personal income tax in his two-year budget proposal, he does want the sales tax to apply to more goods and services.

The caucus, however, has recommended exempting household goods and services from any expansion of the sales tax base.
