TORRINGTON -- Crews battled a 3-alarm fire in that displaced 30 people Friday night in Torrington.
The fire broke out about 9:20 p.m. at the Woodland Hills apartments at 330 Highland Avenue.
The first Torrington Fire Department Unit found the rear porches fully involved in the 8-unit 2 ½ story wood frame building. Initial reports were that occupants were still within the building, and firefighters began knocking on doors and trying to find anyone who might be inside.
In a press release, Fire Chief Peter Towey said that, "Due to the large volume of fire and the life hazard present, the assignment was upgraded to a 3rd alarm, recalling off duty personnel for manpower and city coverage. The TFD mounted an aggressive initial fire attack while ensuring all occupants had evacuated."
Everyone inside the building got out safely and no injuries were reported.
Surrounding department including Drakeville Volunteer Fire Dept., Torringford Volunteer Fire Dept., Harwinton Westside Volunteer Fire Department, Litchfield Volunteer Fire Department, and Winsted Volunteer Fire Department assisted. Over 50 firefighters responded to the scene.
Towey says the fire was brought under control by 10:54 p.m., and most of the damage was done to 2-3 units. 30 people from 8 families were displaced by the fire; the Red Cross assisting those that require emergency housing.
The Torrington and State Fire Marshals are conducting an origin and cause investigation, no cause has been determined at this time
