MIDDLETOWN — A former nurse has been convicted of patient abuse at Connecticut’s only maximum-security psychiatric hospital.

A Superior Court jury in Middletown found Mark Cusson guilty on three counts of cruelty to persons and five counts of disorderly conduct. Cusson was acquitted on eight other counts Thursday following about two weeks of testimony.

Ex-nurse convicted after trial in Whiting Forensic abuse case

The case stems from a patient abuse scandal at the state-run Whiting Forensic Hospital that led to the arrests of 10 employees and several dozen firings.

Prosecutors say a patient, William Shehadi, was subjected to numerous acts of abuse over several weeks in 2017 at the state-run facility, including being kicked and having food thrown at him.

Cusson’s attorney says his client is disappointed by the verdict and will appeal.

Sentencing is set for June 20.
