NEW HAVEN — A Connecticut man who bilked an elderly woman out of more than $500,000 by claiming to have leukemia has been sentenced to six years in prison.
The New Haven Register reports that 36-year-old James Cicarella was also sentenced this week to five years of probation after pleading no contest to first-degree larceny charges.
Police say the Madison man led an elderly Wallingford woman to believe she was giving him money to cover medical insurance and health care, but he used the money to buy and furnish a house, a luxury SUV, jewelry and electronics.
The woman also sued Cicarella, who testified in the civil case that he wasn’t sick.
Cicarella was charged with defrauding the woman of $578,466 in 2013 and 2014.
