PD: 9-year-old boy shot in New Haven while looking for stolen basketball

NEW HAVEN — Police said a 9-year-old boy who was a passenger in vehicle, was shot Tuesday evening.

According to police, the 9-year-old was outside playing basketball on a court near his home. More boys eventually joined the game until one of the boys took the 9-year-old’s ball and left with it.

A short time later, police say the 9-year-old and his father walked around their Dixwell neighborhood, looking for the ball. Eventually, the father and the son were picked up by the mother in a car.

While the car was driving on Foote Street just before 7 p.m., police say several gunshots were fired at the family’s car, and the 9-year-old was hit once in the pelvis. The family drove to Yale-New Haven Hospital’s Saint Raphael campus. Yale Child Study Center clinicians also responded to the scene where there had been several neighborhood children present during the shooting.

Police describe the 9-year-old’s injuries as non-life threatening, and has since been taken to Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital where he remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Witnesses to the shooting are asked to call the New Haven Police Department Detective Bureau at 203-946-6304.
