MIDDLETOWN — A three-car crash on the Arrigoni Bridge Wednesday night sent multiple people to the hospital, and temporarily closed the bridge.

According to police, a Middletown Police Officer had pulled over a white Mercedes-Benz for a traffic violation on Main Street at Hartford Avenue.

When the officer approached the car, the driver reportedly acknowledged the officer before driving off, running a red light and narrowly missing cross-traffic in the direction of the Arrigoni Bridge.

Police said when the officer arrived at the approach to the bridge, he saw a three-car crash involving the Mercedes-Benz.

According to police, when the Mercedes-Benz approached the bridge, it drove into the center median and struck the guardrail, subsequently striking a Nissan Murano traveling westbound on the bridge, and a Ford Taurus that was also traveling westbound on the bridge. All three cars had severe damage.

Police said the driver of the Mercedez-Benz was treated for injuries at the scene, and later taken to Hartford Hospital for further treatment. Police have not identified them at this time.

The drivers of the Nissan and Ford were also treated at the scene and then taken to area hospitals for further treatment.

The crash is still under investigation and police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call Office Passacantdo at 860-638-4063.
