STAMFORD — A New York City woman who has been diagnosed as a kleptomaniac has given a tearful apology in court after being sentenced to a day in jail. She plead guilty to stealing nearly $70,000 from her Connecticut-based employer.

The Stamford Advocate reports that 33-year-old Jenna DiNapoli, of the Bronx, was also sentenced Thursday to three years of probation and ordered to repay the money she pleaded guilty to stealing from Asbury Moulding and Millwork in Stamford.

DiNapoli, a former bookkeeper at the company, tearfully said she was ashamed of stealing from her boss, who she considered a father figure, and misses him every day.

She pleaded guilty to first-degree larceny.

She told the judge she is seeking treatment. The judge said a diagnosis of kleptomania is not “a license to steal.”
