NEW BRITAIN --  New Britain fire officials say people were able to safely get out of a six-unit apartment building as it went up in flames Tuesday night.

According to New Britain Fire Department, heavy flames and thick, black smoke conditions were reported around 8 p.m. Firefighters conducted a primary search over all three floors of the six-unit apartment building to make sure people made it out safely.

Four firefighters had to get out quickly once flames began shooting through the roof, affecting the building's structural integrity, according to the New Britain Fire Department.

The fire had to be battled from the outside, and fire crews from Hartford and West Hartford were brought in to help.

Officials said this is an active investigation.

At least 11 people forced from their homes. The Red Cross is assisting those displaced

NB Fire Marshal – along with State Fire Marshal’s office investigating the fire.

No initial cause has been determined.

Officials don't know if tenants will be permitted back inside, that will be issue for landlord and insurance company to decide as there are obvious liability issues.

Fire crews were on scene until 2am
