NEW HAVEN — Outrage and a call to end gun violence in the city rang from the Newhallville section of New Haven after an 8-year-old boy was shot last night while in a first-floor bedroom.

“This is a horrific and cowardly act that has happened in our community,” said Rev. Boise Kimber.

Surveillance video released by New Haven Police depicts a light-colored sedan that they say appears to be looking for an address. The driver passes the house and then backs up. The passenger then gets out of the car and fires multiple shots at the home.

“Yesterday our community was terrorized by someone who committed a cowardly act to indiscriminately shoot into a home,” said New Haven Police Chief Tony Reyes.

At 11:23 p.m. Friday night police responded to Thompson Street after ShotSpotter reported gunfire in the area. Some officers patrolling the neighborhood heard the shots and reported to the scene.

A neighbor who did not want to be shown on camera told FOX61 he recalls hearing three shots. By the time he got outside to check things out police were already on scene.

Police believe that the shooter may match the description of the Hamden shooter who struck five at a pool party just a few hours earlier.

“That is what we believe now based on what our investigation is yielding but that could change,” said Chief Reyes.

The young boy was shot in the calf. He was taken to Yale New Haven Children’s hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

“We will not tolerate this in this community,” said Rev. Kimber. “The babies belong to us.”

Detectives say they have received an overwhelming response from the community with tips about the shooter. They are also thoroughly examining ballistic evidence found from the scene. Police are calling the shooting “targeted”, but the motivation is unknown.

“We will expend every single resource. We will find you,” said Chief Reyes. “I can assure you that we will not rest until we bring you to justice.”

New Haven detectives are in hourly communication with Hamden police as the two investigate the shootings. They urge anyone with information about the shootings to contact the New Haven Police Detective Bureau at (203)946-6304
