TORRINGTON — The University of Connecticut is asking a judge for a ruling that would allow it to sell its former Torrington campus.

The school’s Board of Trustees has already approved the sale of the property to Five Points Center for the Visual Arts of Torrington.

But the Republican-American reports the sale can only be finalized if a judge releases UConn from restrictions imposed on the school under the will of the property’s original owner, Julia Booker Thompson.

State law requires that an asset dedicated to charitable use “shall forever remain to the uses and purposes” to which it had been granted.

UConn says because the site would be used for arts education, a judge should find that reasonably approximates the donation’s objectives.

A hearing is scheduled on Aug. 28 in Torrington Superior Court.
