NEW HAVEN -- New Haven Police announced Sunday an arrest was made in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Javier Martinez back in 2013, and on Thursday afternoon, the department discussed their break.
After five years of an in-depth investigation, New Haven officials identified the person responsible as 22-year-old Tyhitt Bember of New Haven.
Police say their investigation revealed Martinez was walking alone from his residence headed to a nearby friend’s house. He was approached by two males, one of whom was armed.
The armed male attempted to rob him, which led to a brief struggle. After the struggle Martinez attempted to run away at which point he was fatally shot.
Bember is currently in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Correction, serving a sentence for a non-fatal shooting that occurred in January of 2014, in the area of James Hillhouse High School.
On July 7, 2019, Sergeant Bertram Ettienne secured an Arrest Warrant for Bember for felony murder, first degree criminal attempt/bobbery and carrying a pistol or revolver without a permit.
Bember was arraigned in New Haven Court on Thursday.
