Lawmakers call for black bear hunting season
HARTFORD — Two Connecticut lawmakers are calling for a legal bear hunt in the state after a bear knocked a hiker down last weekend.
A man hiking near Lake Zoar in Southbury on Saturday suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a black bear knocked him to the ground .
In a joint press release Monday afternoon, Republican state senators Eric Berthel and Craig Miner said a bear hunting season is “the only way to get this population under control.”
Berthel’s district includes Southbury.
The senators say they’re concerned bear encounters will continue and potentially have fatal consequences.
The pair suggests a “limited bear hunting season.” They have not said when the hunt would take place or where bear hunts would be allowed.
