HARTFORD, Connecticut — For 17 years, percussionist Rueven Weizberg has been bringing the magic of Disney's “The Lion King” to life on stage, creating a musical landscape that transcends generations. Starting as a Broadway substitute, he has since become a full-time tour musician, witnessing the show's enduring appeal firsthand.
The percussion section of The Lion King is far more than just background music. With 10 musicians—two visible in the house and eight in the pit—the percussionists play a crucial role in storytelling. Their instruments paint sonic landscapes, support dancers, and create dramatic sound effects that bring the narrative to life.
The musician's setup is a testament to musical diversity, featuring instruments from around the world:
West African drums from Guinea
Afro-Cuban instruments from Cuba and Puerto Rico
A Nigerian log drum (ekwe)
Instruments from China
Having traveled to West Africa to study drums, Weizberg brings an authentic touch to the performance. He studied with master drummers in Guinea, understanding how rhythms and dances are integrated into everyday life.
What makes The Lion King truly special is its universal appeal. From infants to people in their 90s, the show captivates audiences across generations. As the musician notes, "There's literally something for everybody"—whether it's the South African vocals, intricate instrumentation, puppetry, or masks.
One of the show's most poignant aspects is its timeless narrative. As a fellow Broadway actor once remarked, the audience of tomorrow hasn't even been born yet—a testament to the show's enduring magic.
