DERBY, Connecticut — The fourth annual Pop of Color Outdoor Quilt Show is returning to the Kellogg Estate at 500 Hawthorne Avenue in Derby from Thursday through Sunday, according to a release from the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Each day, the festivities begin at 10 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. Visitors will be able to view a diverse collection of quilts on display, which will decorate the historic gardens and grounds, the release said. No reservations are necessary.

DEEP noted that Mrs. Frances Kellogg “bequeathed her property to the State of Connecticut, which is now Osbornedale State Park and the Kellogg Estate.”

Kellogg was known for her love of arts and culture. The release said the creative spirit of the Pop of Color textile display shines a light on local quilters and the artistic work they create. During the upcoming show, attendees can view a special quilt created by the Southford Falls Quilt Guild called “Crazy Quilt, The Cultural Diversity of the Naugatuck Valley”.

The project took a year to create and showcases the “diversity of the valley through the fabrics of the people living in the valley, present and past,” the release said.

Members of the guild provided a “myriad of quilts for this year’s show” and will be there in person to welcome visitors and answer questions, DEEP said.

“The stories of people and families, as told by quilts, are a most fascinating part of this art style,” according to the release.

Quilts will not be displayed during inclement weather, including high winds. The release advises potential attendees to call the Kellogg Environmental Center at 203-734-2513 to confirm if weather conditions are ideal enough for the event to occur.

Indoor options may be provided, and picnicking is permitted on the grounds. Groups are welcome to join tours of the quilt show.

DEEP asks for people to let the department know if their guild or club plans to attend.

According to the release, in addition to the display at the Kellogg Estate, the Derby Neck Library at 307 Hawthorne Avenue, which is historically tied to Kellogg, partners with the Kellogg Estate’s Pop of Color show by hosting a program and displaying additional quilts on their property.

On Saturday, from 2-3 p.m., the library will host a presentation by Tangular Irby, the granddaughter of Gee’s Bend quilters, Pearlie Kennedy Pettway and Jensie Lee Irby.

DEEP said Irby will read from her book “Pearl and her Gee’s Bend Quilt” and present on the history and story of Gees Bend, its legacy and the importance of family. Registration is required for this event. One can contact the Derby Neck Library for more information on its program.

DEEP noted that the Kellogg Estate is a State Park and Outreach facility operated by the department that is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

“It is composed of the Kellogg Environmental Center, estate grounds, historical gardens and the Osborne Homestead Museum. The museum is open for the peak season Thursday – Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, 12-4 p.m.,” the release said.
