Family-friendly events happening in Connecticut this weekend

From music jams to parties celebrating the start to summer, here's what's happening across the state this weekend!

CONNECTICUT, USA — After a week of heat, things will cool down a little bit this weekend. If you're looking to get out and about to celebrate the official start to summer, here are some things you can check out around the state!

Put on your dancing shoes Friday night and boogie on down to The Marina at American Wharf in Norwich for Salsa at the Marina! Transport yourself to Haana at this fun and free event. There will be salsa lessons, a live band, a cigar station, and delicious food and cocktails! It's all taking place at the beautiful waterfront in downtown Norwich. The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Learn more here.

Get out and smell the roses! The Connecticut Historic Gardens Day will happen on Sunday, and it's a state-wide event to honor Connecticut's 16 historic gardens. Each of the gardens will be hosting special activities to celebrate! Some activities and offers will include free admission, guided tours, gardening workshops, crafts for kids, and even a live performance of Meanwhile at Longbourd: A Pride and Prejudice Adaption. Also happening Sunday, head to Old Saybrook for the Celebrate Saybrook Street Party! The town's main street will be transformed into a pedestrian walkway and filled with all kinds of fun activities in celebration of the start of summer. There will be more than 70 local vendors to shop and over 30 different food options, plus craft beer, wine, and refreshing hard ciders. There will also be many activities for families, including an inflatable obstacle course, report control car races, face painting, and games. Of course, the Travelers Championship tournament will happen all weekend at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell! Ticket prices range depending on the day and the venue. There are plenty of places to sit, and there's also the Fan Zone! Learn more about the event here.

Dive into summer at the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford with their annual Party on the Plaza! This is a family-friendly day packed with activities and exciting attractions that'll make your summer unforgettable. There will be an extravaganza of giant inflatables, summer music, airbrush tattoos, interactive LIVE science demos, and classic carnival games! Also, don't miss a special appearance from Hartford Athletics mascot Dillon! The part will happen on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more here.

Head to Milford on Saturday for the 9th Annual Charles Island SUP Cup! This beach party extravaganza will have live music to jam out to as you challenge your friends in a hula hoop context; kids can unleash their creativity in the craft tent and participate in paddleboard races! This event is fun for all ages and all families! Witness the biggest paddleboard, kayak, and surf ski race in Connecticut! The event will happen between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more here! 

Say hello to summer in Mystic with two nights of River Jam! On Friday, the line-up will feature The Pneumatics, The Troublemakers, Wooly Mammoth, and Mystic Dead from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Saturday, it's a full day of The Subliminals, The Decker Bandits, Jeremiah Hazed, Glaucoma Suspect, Oblivious Fools, and Mystic Dead from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.!
