CONNECTICUT, USA — Hello, August, and hello to the final full month of summer! It's the first weekend of the month and between the chances for some storms, you can head out to some awesome summertime events taking place across the state!
It's Sunflowers, Sips, and Sunsets this summer weekend at Lyman Orchards! Walk your way through nearly one mile of winding pathways in the state's original sunflower mate and also enjoy a variety of local Connecticut wines. The 2024 Hartford Yard Goats-themed sunflower maze is around three acres with around 350,000 yellow, red, and orange sunflowers! Art returns to the main streets of historic South Norwalk this Saturday and Sunday! The SoNo Arts Festival will feature fine artists displaying and selling jewelry, original paintings, and other art genres. Local businesses and other art associations will bring activities, displays, and other specials. The festival will take place rain or shine on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free. Learn more here.
The Brass City Jazz Festival will jam out on Saturday in Waterbury! This year's festival will feature an all-star lineup of jazz musicians from around the region and country, including Billboard #1 and 2023 Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year saxophonist Vincent Ingala. In addition to top talent, attendees can enjoy a variety of artisans and business vendors, along with food and drink options. The festival runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Learn more here.
Head back in time and immerse yourself in the history of the Thames River with the Military On The Thames Boat Tour! With two forts that have seen battles and defeats and are the birthplace of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine, with this event, you'll understand the value of this storied waterway and region and hear a few of the thousand stories of their history. 100% of the profit from your ticket purchase benefits Thames River Heritage Park Foundation and helps to connect, support, promote, and sustain over 20 heritage sites and institutions along the Thames. Check out the 36th Annual Children's Circus of Middletown this weekend! It's a performance that's the culmination of a five-week day camp that's part of the city's Kids Arts program. Over those five weeks, the kids are trained in performance skills, acrobatics, juggling, dance, unicycling, clowning, stilting and more! The circus is made up of 175 children. The performance, which is open to the public, will happen on Friday from 5 p.m. outside of the Macdonough Elementary School with a rain date on Saturday, also beginning at 5 p.m. Learn more about this event here.
