WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. — The exhibit called the Tuskegee Airmen: Their Untold Stories, was dedicated last June at the New England Air Museum and just six months later, the exhibit has achieved a special honor.
The permanent exhibit, which takes up a prominent part of the floor space next to a famed B-29 Bomber, has been designated a stop on the Connecticut Freedom Trail.
“We are so honored and excited,” said Stephanie Abrams, the president and CEO of the New England Air Museum. “These are American heroes who are unsung heroes.”
Mike Thornton, the curator of the New England Air Museum said the team at the museum is especially proud of the Tuskegee Airmen exhibit.
“People might know the Red Tails and they might know of the Tuskegee Airmen but there haven’t been many efforts to put this incredible story into a museum setting,” he said.
The official designation to become part of the Connecticut Freedom Trail is planned on Feb. 21 when the New England Air Museum will hold a ceremony that state leaders and museum supporters will attend.
“It's been surprising to me how many people didn’t know about the Tuskegee Airmen so it’s important to keep their story alive and with their story, they changed the world,” added Abrams.
