ENFIELD, Conn. — Just in time for “Shark Week”, the owner of Enfield Scuba and Watersports is taking about among his most popular courses.
For John Langlois, who has owned Enfield Scuba for 20 years, one of the most specialized courses he offers is wreck diving. Students come from around the area to learn from Enfield Scuba instructors who teach a course in “Shipwreck Diving Certification”.
The course is offered to established scuba divers and Langlois said it involves four dives which can be performed locally or in far-off locations.
“You have to be a certified diver to start and then the actual course is diving four different shipwrecks where we have general performance requirements on each one,” he said.
Laura Seese, a veteran dive instructor at Enfield Scuba. said there has been more intrigue about wreck diving since last month’s tragedy surrounding the Titan – a submersible that catastrophically imploded during an expedition to see the remains of the Titanic.
The Titan disaster has nothing to do with what conventional dives entail.
“I think what is interesting is more people who aren’t divers have suddenly become interested because it has been in the news,” Seese said. “They have been asking us more about it and calling to learn about diving and getting into it.”
Langlois, who estimated that he has taken groups to over 100 dives at shipwrecks all over the world, said the trips never get old.
“The thrill is there, a lot of it is history. We dive during the day, we talk about it at night, and then we remember it for years to come,” he said.
