A growing mission in Griswold: 'Sunflowers for Wishes' blooms

The annual fundraiser for Make-A-Wish CT returns to Buttonwood Farm.

GRISWOLD, Conn. — Sunflowers for Wishes, an annual fundraiser benefitting Make-A-Wish Connecticut, is in bloom once again – 21 years after the goodwill mission began at Buttonwood Farm.

The premise is simple; visitors come and cut fresh sunflowers and 100% of the proceeds go to local Make-A-Wish families to help wishes come true.

“It’s our largest community event of the year,” said Christina Alt, the senior community fundraising manager at Make-A-Wish Connecticut. She added, “We just call on the community to show up and help make it a success.”

Sunflowers for Wishes has evolved over the past two decades. It was on a single acre when it started. Now, the sunflowers cover 14 acres of the farm.

Buttonwood Farm owner Duane Button said, “It’s a little over 420,000 flowers… This is a wonderful thing for so many people.”

Alt added that the impact of selling the sunflowers over the past 21 years has been remarkable.

“We’re making wishes come true one sunflower at a time," Alt said. "It’s raised over $1.9 million, that’s over 190 wishes that have come true for local Connecticut kids right in our backyard.”

For 2024, Sunflowers for Wishes runs from Saturday, July 20 through Sunday, July 28 at Buttonwood Farm in Griswold. For more information, click here.
