STORRS, Conn. — The madness of March centers around Storrs almost every year and in 2024, the hoop hype is heightened.
Coming off of a men’s national basketball championship in 2023, students on campus are eager for a repeat as the UConn men’s team made short work of both Stetson and Northwestern to reach the NCAA “Sweet 16”.
Trent Love, a UConn junior and avid Husky fan said, “the boys are playing great, they got a really big win yesterday and they are going to keep rolling.”

While the women’s hoop team is in a more underdog role this season, students are standing behind them too.
“This is the basketball capital of the world,” said UConn junior Matt Mura-Sanchez.
Mura-Sanchez, a finance major, was quick to point out that the numbers are in the Huskies’ favor.
“The last time a year ended in a “4” – in 2014 – the men and women’s teams both won the national championship so this year it’s looking like that again.”
Graduate Student Abi Buckley added, “(the men) won last year, I want double this year.”
With the future on the court uncertain, the overall feeling from students is to keep the games going and that they bring pride.
Mairead Breton, a UConn graduate student, said of all the Husky basketball success, “I think just for me that it's the spirit of being a UConn student it’s just great, it just feels good – I’m just so proud to be a UConn student.”
