HARTFORD, Conn. — You might not know Severance Foods, but you’ve probably had more than a sampling of their snack items. 40-year-old Severance Foods is now a second-generation enterprise that makes tortilla chips for labels across the country.
Severance is now led by business partners, Martha Lucas and Rick Stevens, whose dads were both food scientists and began the company in 1984.
"You will know us by a majority of the tortilla chips that you see in the chip aisle. We do a lot of the grocery stores, we do a lot of local brands,” said Martha Lucas, who serves as the vice president of management at Severance.
Stevens, who is the vice president of business development.
“We supply store chains right here in Connecticut, we supply store chains based in Austin, Texas, San Diego, California, Miami, Florida, they’re all over the place,” he said.
The local brand of tortilla chips closest to their hearts is their Hartford-made “Pan De Oro” label, which now boats six varieties.
“Lots of salt, lots of oil and bubbles – that’s the bread and butter,” said Lucas
“There are so many parameters into making the perfect chip," said Stevens.
As Super Bowl Sunday approaches, both Lucas and Stevens were excited for the week ahead.
“It’s our favorite week of the year, it is one of our biggest months of sales," Stevens said.
Lucas added that being in Hartford for four decades has added to their recipe for success.
“We love Connecticut, and we love being local,” Lucas said.
