Power and skiers return to Mohawk Mountain following nor'easter

“It’s definitely a different world up here."

CORNWALL, Conn. — It was somewhat paradoxical to the staff at Mohawk Mountain that a snowstorm prevented them from welcoming skiers and snowboarders. That’s what happened on Tuesday when a powerful nor’easter whipped through much of the state leaving towns in the higher elevations without power. Mohawk lost power early on during the storm and shut down for the day.

"It was definitely a different world up here, we had wind – little snow tornadoes out here on the hill," said Steve Hedden, the operations manager at Mohawk.

Eversource crews worked through the night and power came back on Wednesday morning at Mohawk, the lifts opened for skiers by noon.

"We don’t usually close and it’s ironic being a ski area – you ski on snow, but we closed because of snow but it had more to do with the winds and the type of snow, the wet dense stuff," Hedden added.

Snowboarder Christian Cruz, who traveled from Sherman to hit the slopes, said it was worth the wait.

"When I saw the snow, I said I have to take the day off so I’m here today and hopefully they will be open a couple more weeks," he said.

While the heavier snow wasn’t optimal for skiers, after grooming it, Hedden says it will help prolong the season at Mohawk Mountain.

"It’s a beautiful thing that Winter finally showed up – here we are in March so I’m assuming everyone will be happy as well," Hedden added. "The goal is to ski into early April, but we will see what happens."
