EAST WINDSOR, Conn. — Motormen are being trained, docents are learning the storied history and more trolley cars are getting ready to roll out as Memorial Day approaches at the Connecticut Trolley Museum.
The museum is over eight decades old and the holiday weekend always serves as a marker for their busiest time of the year.
“This is really when people start to show up and enjoy this place,” said Jon McPartland, a motorman and the motorman trainer at the Connecticut Trolley Museum.
Gina Maria Alimberti, the executive director of the Connecticut Trolley Museum, said that 2024 will provide ample chances for visitors to climb aboard what she calls “rolling history."
According to Alimberti, the museum has “8 operational trolleys that you can actually ride on and we have about 50 to 70 in the collection that you can view.”
Because the Trolley Museum is a not-for-profit venue, Alimberti stressed that Memorial Day Weekend and, especially when schools are out during the summer, is their most important time of the year to help pay the bills at the museum.
“It’s a great time for us because we are a seasonal museum,” Alimberti said.
“This museum has been here over 80 years if this isn’t a part of our local history, I don’t know what is,” McPartland said. “Every time you come back you will see something different; you will learn something new, and you will find a new experience that you can take back to others.”
The Connecticut Trolley Museum is open on weekends (and also on Memorial Day) through June 23. The museum opens every day except Mondays beginning on June 29 through Sept. 2. To learn more, click here.
