CROMWELL, Conn. — The record temperatures that have hit Connecticut have also made an impact at The First Tee of Connecticut.
The golf enrichment program that is situated just steps from the Travelers Championship Course at the TPC River Highlands has its programs in full swing during spring break thanks to favorable golf weather.
“This is perfect golf weather,” said KJ Smith, the community outreach manager for the First Tee.
He then added that the First Tee often provides a first opportunity for some kids to get acquainted with Golf.
“When I ask who has played Golf, normally its Mini-Golf. I don’t know of any of them have had a full swing opportunity with a real golf club,” he said.
On a Thursday where temperatures were approaching 90 degrees, 22 Hartford-area students from Camp Courants’ spring break program were at the First Tee taking their swings.
“This is about developing new skills and it’s all about developing life skills along the way. It’s a win-win,” said Sam Tapper, Camp Courant’s mission engagement coordinator.
Smith said that golf, “is a sport you can play forever,” and then added, “but at the end of the day I want to make sure they (the students) are respectful, they are responsible, and they are being good people in the community.”
