MYSTIC, Conn. — Another beluga whale from Canada at Mystic Aquarium is in critical condition, officials announced Friday.
The whale is one of the five belugas to arrive from Marineland in Canada in May 2021. Since the whales arrived in Connecticut, the aquarium says their staff have experienced moments of "joy and sorrow."
Two of the whales have died. A third whale – Jetta – was also in critical condition and has since recovered and is back in the main habitat “where she is thriving after a year in critical care,” Mystic officials said.
“Despite the dedicated efforts of our veterinary and animal care teams, we find ourselves in a challenging moment and seek all the prayers, good vibes, and community support that our Mystic Aquarium family can offer,” the aquarium said in a statement on Facebook.
The whale, which the aquarium did not identify, is receiving round-the-clock care, with “every conceivable measure being taken to address its health concerns", the aquarium said in a social media post.
“The well-being of our marine family is our paramount concern, and we want to keep our valued community informed about the situation,” the aquarium said.
Officials said they remain hopeful and focused on the well-being of the beloved beluga whale.
