HARTFORD, Conn. — Hartford police are investigating after two abandoned Pitbull dogs were found injured in the capital city on Friday morning. One dog continues to recover as the community is trying to figure out what happened.
Police and animal control officers were called to a wooded area near Albany Avenue and Mark Twain Drive, where officers found two Pitbulls with injuries all over their bodies.
Len Cohen, a volunteer with Dog Star Rescue, said he was driving in the area when he saw people tending to the injured dogs. He stopped to help them out.
"Everyone's reaction was immediately just shocked and angry...and we wanted to help them as quickly as we could," Cohen said.
The graphic injuries could be seen in photos from Dog Star Rescue. One dog lost its ears from its injuries, with the wounds exposed.
Both dogs were taken to an area veterinarian, where one had to be euthanized, police said.
"It was just a horrific injury," said Dan McCabe, president of Dog Star Rescue. "This is not OK in our community."
The surviving dog is currently recovering from injuries at Hartford Animal Control, according to McCabe.
Now the non-profit is helping to spread the word to find out what happened to the dogs.
"We will do whatever we can to find the criminals who did this, working with police and animal control," McCabe said.
