BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — After an election that came neck and neck, or rather, "by a whisker," the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport has a new animal mayor.

Out of the five candidates in the running, Tahu the North American River Otter came on top, with challenger Alli the Eastern Box Turtle coming in just 15 votes behind.

Tahu, a mother of four otter pups, said it was an honor to be elected and she promises to be a mayor for all animals during the next 12 months, the zoo said.

She also complimented the other four candidates on running a clean campaign, according to the zoo.

Alli, along with candidates Major Tom the Narragansett Turkey, Daisy the Prairie Dog, and Ella the Howler Monkey, all conceded the race.

Alli will still have municipal responsibilities for the zoo, as she will serve as Deputy Mayor and will step in if Tahu is unable to fulfill her duties during her term.

Tahu's campaign slogan was "Ready to Dive In!" However, she insists she will "test the waters before issuing new edicts," the zoo said on her behalf.

How was this election held in the first place? Fans of the Beardsley Zoo and the public were encouraged to cast their votes online by making a $1 donation for each vote. Polls were open for about eight days, from Halloween to Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re all behind Tahu as our new mayor, but the real winner of this election is the Zoo,” said Zoo Director Gregg Dancho. “We thank everyone who voted for their generosity in supporting this fundraiser."

All donations collected during the zoo's election will be towards the zoo's conservation, education, research, and fun efforts.

Tahu's swearing-in ceremony will be announced at a later date.
