NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Colin Caplan is well known in New Haven Pizza circles, and he says the coveted charred and sauced ovals that come out of ovens across the area have never been more sought-after.
Caplan, who runs “Taste of New Haven Food Tours” is particularly pleased with all of the coverage he has seen of late surrounding New Haven-style pizza.
“The national news, the international news, it’s all about New Haven pizza," said Caplan.
In just the past two weeks alone, Caplan remarked that he and several pizza shop owners in the area have been profiled in not one but two New York Times articles focusing on the pizza native to New Haven.
“We’re witnessing the highest level of New Haven Pizza making and pizza fame,” laughed Caplan.
Frank Patrick, a co-partner at Bar, a famed New Haven Pizza restaurant and brewery said he is seeing things trend up as well.
“We see ourselves and every other pizza place constantly in the media now,” said Patrick. "People from all over the world come through and I think they are seeing New Haven Pizza is by far the best.”
On Broadway in New Haven, Jeremy Cobden, the owner of Campus Customs, a screen printing and sportswear shop has also got into the New Haven Pizza craze. Cobden began a line of “Apizza” merchandise.
“It was just a natural way to kind of push New Haven Pizza and encourage people to visit all the different pizza places in New Haven,” said Cobden.
Cobden also runs a website that sells all of his New Haven Pizza Swag called PizzaLifeNewHaven.com
Caplan, who has written a well-received book called “Pizza in New Haven”, said New Haven pizza has spread nationwide.
“New Haven Pizza isn’t just in New Haven, you can find it all of the country, people are talking about it, wondering about it and figuring out how they can get it," said Caplan. "This is what they want to hear, and this is what they want to eat”
