MANCHESTER, Conn. — The Manchester Cycle Shop was riding high on Wednesday, teeming with teens from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford – all of them excited for a bike giveaway.
The event where dozens of teens got to pick out their own new bike was made possible by The Cigna Group, as part of a broader wellness goal.
“These kids are getting bikes through our partnership between the Cigna Group and the Boys and Girls Club of Hartford as part of our mission to support health and vitality in the community where we live, work, and play,” said Joanna Engel, the community program advisor at Cigna.
Rihanna Boland is ready to hit the road with her new blue BMX bike.
“I don’t have to pay for bus fare anymore, I don’t have to ask my dad for rides anymore, I can just ride my bike,” said Boland, who is a rising senior at Weaver High School in Hartford and a part of the Boys and Girls Clubs.
The Manchester Cycle Shop gave out 75 new bikes and new helmets to help Hartford kids.
“One of the pillars we focus on with the Boys and Girls Club is health and wellness and this ties right into that,” said Tomeka Cole, the vice president of development and community at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford.
“This helps kids out so they can get to school or any place they would need to go,” said Damnic Gittens, a Cheney Tech High School student and Boys and Girls Club member.
