CONNECTICUT, USA — In six Connecticut towns, officers conducting traffic stops could surprise drivers this holiday season with gift cards instead of tickets.
According to East Haven police, officers from the South-Central Connecticut Traffic Unit, or SCCTU, are participating in a new holiday safety initiative that blends "enforcement with positivity" to strengthen each communities' relationship with law enforcement.
The unit includes officers from North Branford, East Haven, North Haven, Branford, Guilford and Madison.
“While our primary goal remains ensuring the safety of our roadways, we see this as an opportunity to give back to the community and show appreciation during the holiday season,” said East Haven Sgt. Joseph Mulhern, “And who knows? Santa himself might join us on patrol!”
Police said the financial support of the member Police Unions made the initiative possible.
Over the past year, SCCTU traffic stops have led to "enhanced roadway safety and significant criminal apprehensions, including suspects with active warrants and stolen vehicle recoveries," police said.
Police are asking all drivers to remember safe driving habits, especially during the holiday season.
