HARTFORD, Conn. — Over the past 14 years, Amazon has been one of the greatest contributors to Connecticut’s economy and workforce, according to a release from the global company.

On Tuesday, Amazon shared findings from its 2024 U.S. Economic Impact Report, which claims that the company has invested more than $9.5 billion in Connecticut since 2010 while creating more than 17,000 jobs in the state during that time span. The jobs range from operations to logistics functions.

In 2023, Amazon said it supported jobs across the state in industries such as construction, transportation, retail, healthcare, hospitality and more. The report was produced by economists at Keystone Strategy and offers estimates of the company’s 2023 investments in areas such as infrastructure and compensation as well as the downstream effects of those investments, according to the release.

According to Amazon, the report estimates that the company has invested more than $280 billion in small towns and rural areas across the United States since 2010, offering access to good jobs, benefits and new opportunities.

“For 30 years, Amazon has made meaningful investments across the U.S. that have contributed over $1 trillion to the American economy since 2010 alone,” Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s vice president of Worldwide Economic Development, said in the release.

Sullivan said Amazon’s focus on delivering for its customers has led the company to invest throughout the country in communities of all sizes.

“From our operations footprint to our logistics network, to our cloud infrastructure, we’ve created one million good jobs with great benefits that help unlock opportunity for individuals and their communities across the U.S.,” Sullivan added in the release.

The release also noted that Amazon was named the #1 Investment Hero of 2024 by the Progressive Policy Institute after it invested more in the U.S. than any other American company for the fifth consecutive year. The Progressive Policy Institute said Amazon earned the ranking by consistently investing in infrastructure, listing more than $36 billion in capital expenditures in 2023 alone.

Further research by Amazon economists cited in the release says that communities that are home to Amazon facilities see “improved economic outcomes, including increases in household income and employment-to-population ratios.”

“Specifically, the researchers found that a typical mid-sized county that received Amazon’s investment had on average 4,400 more new jobs than a similar county that did not receive an investment by the company,” the release said.

Meanwhile, according to the release, the median household income increased by up to 2.2% in counties that received Amazon investment, translating into families in these communities receiving an additional average of $1,350 per household per year after Amazon opens a facility in their communities.
