SOUTHINGTON, Conn. — It’s been a slow start to the ski season at Mount Southington as they and other Connecticut ski areas have struggled to make snow. But this week, a new year brings new hope.
“It gets a little frustrating when you are looking at the forecast and you are looking at marginal temperatures -- and maybe not quite marginal temperatures -- and you are shaking your head,” said Jay Dougherty, the general manager at Mount Southington."But it seems like we were blessed with a couple of opportunities to make enough snow to get (100%) opened and now it looks like winter has finally arrived."
Not getting ahead of himself, Dougherty also was hopeful that the forecast of snow for the weekend ahead would set its sights on the slopes of Mount Southington.
“It’s kind of like the best advertising we can have,” Dougherty said. “People see it (snow) in their backyard, and they automatically think, 'Let’s find a winter sport to engage in, and skiing and snowboarding are the best ones to do.'”
Heading to the ‘Avalanche Double Chair’, skier Peter Kronk from New Fairfield said, “Real snow would be really good for the mountain. It would definitely attract people to come ski -- if there is snow on the ground people will come.”
Doherty added that he expects cold temperatures to help his snow-making crew cover all Mount Southington’s trails by next week so it will be 100% open, but he laughed that the real stuff wouldn’t hurt.
“I hope we get six inches of snow, that would be perfect!” said Doherty.
