CONNECTICUT, USA — Any business in Connecticut that sells THC-infused beverages must inventory all the products in their possession on May 14.
A report of that inventory, and a $1 per container fee, must be submitted to the state’s Department of Consumer Protection by June 14, according to a release from the state that said the inventory and associated fee have been implemented as part of a new law passed by the state’s General Assembly.
THC-infused beverages are non-alcoholic drinks that contain THC; they might be displayed as “hemp-derived,” Delta-8, Delta-9, Delta-10, THCA, HHC or similar words, according to the release.
“In addition to taking stock of the current inventory of THC-infused beverages available for sale in Connecticut, this new law prevents sales of THC-infused beverages to minors and takes other steps to protect public health and safety, while still allowing for the sale of certain products in package stores and cannabis retail establishments,” DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli said, in the release.
Cafferelli thanked the state legislature for its collaborative efforts to address the complex issue and expressed gratitude toward DCP for its ongoing efforts to implement the new legislation, the release said.
DCP says businesses that are unsure if they have a THC-infused beverage should check with their supplier.
Under the new law, businesses in possession of previously allowed THC-infused beverages have through June 30 to sell them only if they complete the required inventory and pay the fee, the release said, adding that after July 1, only licensed cannabis retailers and package store permittees may sell THC-infused beverages.
After Oct. 1, THC-infused beverages sold by package stores and cannabis retailers can’t contain over 3 mg of THC per 12-ounce container, according to the release, which said the law also adds other packaging and labeling standards.
In the coming weeks, DCP will continue to provide information to businesses affected by the legislation. DCP will also release new information to the public when it becomes available.
The release reminds adults who consume cannabis or THC-infused drinks to do so responsibly. Businesses with questions may contact DCP at DCP.Cannabis@ct.gov.
