In West Haven, A pizza project to help tour owner survive the pandemic

“Taste of New Haven is changing its role from actual events to virtual events.”

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Colin Caplan, the owner of “Taste of New Haven Food Tours” is accustomed to roaming various restaurants and pizza parlors around the Elm City with scores of guests each week. His food tours have largely halted due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ever inventive, Caplan has taken to Zoom to, at least, try to keep a slice of his business going.

This week Caplan is taking to the internet to launch “Pizza in America.com” -- an interactive way to learn how to make great pizza at home and hear some history behind it.

“This is a virtual pizza event,” Caplan said, “Taste of New Haven is changing its role from actual events to virtual events.”

Caplan is teaching his on-line classes and teaming up with pizza chefs from around the area including Jimmy Ormrod, the 4th generation owner of famous Zuppardi’s Apizza in West Haven. Ormrod says he looks forward to teaching pizza making tips that people can use at home.

“My goal is to make it easy for them, make it less intimidating and share my passion of making pizza.” Classes range in price from $20 to $75 dollars and will usually happen on Tuesdays.

Caplan laughed and added, “This is definitely the power of the pizza and we are going to have more pizza prowess.”
