STRATFORD, Conn. — Longtime Connecticut defense contractor Sikorsky has agreed to build potential new helicopter lines in the state, and ensure that its headquarters will stay in Connecticut for the next 20 years.
In return, Gov. Ned Lamont said Connecticut will provide incentives up to $75 million depending on the level of work secured.
Sikorsky, a division of Lockheed Martin, will be replacing several existing programs in the near future, including their Blackhawk helicopter. The new assembly lines would replace the existing production.
The agreement needs to be approved by the General Assembly.
“Today is an important milestone in our ongoing partnership with Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky,” Lamont said. “If approved, this agreement will support new helicopter production in Connecticut and help enable thousands of Sikorsky jobs for decades to come. I look forward to working with the General Assembly to ratify legislation that will maintain Connecticut’s global reputation as a leader in aerospace innovation.”
Sikorsky said they have facilities in Stratford, Bridgeport, Shelton, North Haven, and Trumbull, and has 242 suppliers throughout Connecticut.
The agreement ensures that Lockheed Martin will continue production in Connecticut for the next 20 years as long as the company is successful in securing federal contracts. Sikorsky has agreed to maintain its headquarters in Connecticut through 2042.
In 2020, the U.S. Navy awarded the aircraft company a new contract for six additional CH-53K King Stallion helicopters. Last year, the company contracted to build five more Presidential helicopters for the U.S. Marine Corps.
House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement, saying she applauds the announced agreement.
“This historic proposal would keep Sikorsky’s headquarters in Connecticut’s Third District for at least the next 20 years and ensure the security of more than 7,000 jobs. As federal contract decisions are being considered regarding Future Vertical Lift helicopters, I will continue to work with Sikorsky to ensure that our military continues to have access to the safest and best equipment in the world," DeLauro said. "I urge the Connecticut General Assembly to quickly approve this proposal, and as always, I will continue to fight to create jobs in Connecticut’s Third Congressional District, home of the world’s best helicopters, and invest in our local economy.”
Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) said, “Sikorsky creates thousands of jobs, is involved in our community, and drives business to many smaller manufacturers, suppliers, and local mom-and-pop shops across our state. A commitment by Sikorsky to continue innovating in our state and creating opportunity is an investment in the next generation of workers and families. These are high-paying jobs and careers that offer a pathway to prosperity. The labor force which makes up the Sikorsky family keeps us free abroad and saves lives.”
