Cheshire ice sculptor spends days inside 18-degree studio

During a heat wave, this might be the coolest job in the state. Bill Covitz works out of a 17' by 17' freezer/studio.

CHESHIRE, Conn. — Bill Covitz has owned “Ice Matters” for 25 years, but during summer heat waves, people become especially curious about his ice capades.

“Ice Matters is a sculpture company, and we do ice sculptures for weddings and corporate events and holiday parties,” said Covitz, who works out of a 17' by 17' freezer/studio that’s on his residential property in Cheshire.

With the heat indices approaching 100 degrees this week, Covitz was busy in his studio working on an elegant ice sculpture for an upcoming wedding and said, “I’d say this time of year, we are pretty fortunate to spend our days in 18 degrees covered in snow. The hardest part for us is just getting out of the freezer.”

He laughed, “I have the coolest job in Connecticut, that’s for sure.”

Keeping his sculptures intact during extreme heat is an exercise. For Covitz, his works of ice are literally frozen assets; he said the electric bills can be thousands of dollars a month this time of year.

“I have 14 compressors going here 24/7 - it’s a mortgage payment for sure," Covitz said.

While business continues to stay busy for Ice Matters – they have expanded their client base to Westchester County and Rhode Island - Covitz added that he looks forward to the fall season.

“The best part of the summer is spending time in the freezer, but ideally the best part for us is when summer ends.”
