CANTON, Conn. — The Sporthouse on Route 44 in Canton, also known as Fatty’s Skis and Boards is reveling in the winter weather.
Now celebrating their 55th year in business, Fatty’s co-owner Bruce Freedman says, so far this year, the business of downhill skiing has been on the rise – partially due to the COVID crisis.
“It’s the social distancing and the outdoors – the whole outdoor industry has gone crazy,” he said.
Freedman, who co-owns Fatty’s/Sporthouse with Steve Unwin, also noted that more people want to support local businesses.
“I think a lot of people are starting to do the ‘Shop Local’ thing and it means a lot to them, so our customer base has grown over the past four or five years,” he said.
Unwin added: “Last year was big, this year is going even bigger, we’re running out of things early so it’s good.”
Just a glance at the women’s ski shelves revealed that Fatty’s had only a select few pairs left to sell until they can restock.
Both Unwin and Freedman said the recent run of snow and cold temperatures has been a plus and more people want to head to the ski mountains.
“The snow doesn’t hurt, once they see it in their backyards they say let’s go – get up and go!” Freedman said.
