Connecticut tax deadline extended to May 17

The Department of Revenue Services Commissioner Mark Boughton made the announcement on Thursday.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Editor's note: Video above aired on March 17, 2021.

The Department of Revenue Services (DRS) announced on Thursday the filing and payment deadline for state individual income tax returns has been extended to Monday, May 17.

“Given the relatively late start to the federal income tax filing season and recent passage of the America Rescue Plan Act, which includes provisions that impact tax filing this year, yesterday’s announcement is understandable,” said Commissioner Mark Boughton. “Taxpayers do an excellent job of filing their Connecticut income tax returns accurately and on time. To further assist and support them, Connecticut will align with the extended federal deadline.”

The extension comes only a day after the IRS pushed back the federal income tax filing deadline also to May 17.

Commissioner Boughton said it's better if one completes their federal return first since CT's individual tax return begins with Federal Gross Income.

Residents are encouraged by the DRS to file electronically through the DRS online Taxpayer Service Center
