Connecticut utility customers to see supply rate changes come July 1: Regulators

The supply rates are adjusted on a biannual basis. This time around, some customers will see "higher-than-normal" rates

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Many utility customers across Connecticut will soon see a price change that will last through the end of the year, according to the state's Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

State regulators advised Thursday that Eversource and United Illuminating will be changing standard service generation rates for both residential and business customers, effective July 1 through Dec. 31.

Traditionally, rates have been lower for the second half of the year, as supply rates are adjusted on a biannual basis. This time around, some customers will see "higher-than-normal" rates.

Eversource's rate will reach 12.050 cents per kWh, PURA says, which is up from 11.484 cents per kWh in January, according to the state Office of Consumer Counsel.

PURA added that UI will be charging 10.620 cents per kWh. That's slightly down from 10.631 cents per kWh in January, according to the state Office of Consumer Counsel.

These rates were decided partially due to the continued supply chain issues, as well as the historically high levels of natural gas prices.

Utility customers also saw a rate increase at the beginning of this year; Eversource customers, in particular, saw electric bills increasing by 21% for the first half of 2022.
