How to prevent yourself from becoming victim to porch pirates this holiday season

According to a report from SafeWise, three out of four Americans had a package swiped in the past 12 months, but there are some ways to protect your items.

CONNECTICUT, USA — The holiday season is here and shopping is in full swing. Wednesday is National Package Protection Day. Anyone can be a victim of porch pirates.

According to a report from SafeWise, three out of four Americans had a package swiped in the past 12 months, but there are some ways to protect your items.

You might have experienced it, or you might know someone who has. Tis the season for porch pirates.

“It’s not fun trying to track whether it’s lost in transit or if it’s actually stolen,” said Shaniece Ferguson.

“Sometimes you are unlucky and people decide that they want to steal your package without even knowing what’s in there,” said Jessica Sierra.

Consumer experts want to make sure you’re not the victim of porch pirates during this holiday season.

“I think that’s the safest way to protect your packages these days. Try to coordinate the delivery times with the times you’re going to be home. Also, have your camera,” said Ferguson.

If a home security camera isn’t an option, there are still other ways to keep items safe.

“I send my stuff to my mom's house because I live in a family home on the third floor.  She lives in a residential area, a dead end. So I put her address down for her to get my packages,” said Sierra.

Those are just some of the tips on the list from Connecticut State Police to protect your packages.

Others include:

  • Asking for your package to be held at your local post office for pickup.
  • Choosing a "ship to store" option if offered by your retailer.
  • Requesting a signature when your package is delivered.

Some of these plans take a team effort. Joanna Davis is a team player for her neighbors.

“At least one of them will call me and say hey are you home? Can you go bring my package in, so I will,”  said Davis.
