WASHINGTON — Samsung is recalling a type of electric stove they sell after approximately 250 fires have been started, injuring people and killing pets.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the front knobs on the Samsung Slide-In Electric Range can be activated by accidental contact from humans or pets, posing a fire hazard. Samsung has received over 300 reports of accidental activation since 2013, including the 250 that led to fires.
These fires have injured approximately 40 people, including eight that required medical attention, resulted in the death of seven pets and caused extensive property damage to at least 18 homes.
Samsung has recalled 30 models sold between May 2013 and August 2024 for between $1,250 and $3,050. Consumers can check the list of recalled models here.
Anyone with one of these models can contact Samsung for a free set of knob locks or covers compatible with their range to install. The CPSC says consumers who own and continue to use the recalled ranges without knob locks or covers should be careful to keep children and pets away from the knobs, check them before leaving home and going to bed and to not leave anything on the stovetop when it is not in use.
Some of these models are Wi-Fi enabled, and owners of those ranges can download the Samsung SmartThings app and enable the “Cooktop On” notification to receive alerts on their phone when a burner is turned on.
