HARTFORD, Conn. — The United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut announced Tuesday that a Newington landscape contractor was ordered to pay $1.75 million and to serve three years of probation for tax evasion.

The press release said Anthony Niro has paid restitution of over $1.4 million to the IRS, and has handed over an additional $12, 300. Niro must pay substantial interest and penalties to the IRS. His wife, involved in the crimes, is awaiting sentencing.

Niro was a co-owner of A. Niro Landscape Contractors, Inc. (“ANLC”) which “provided landscaping and snowplowing services for large commercial properties and for personal residences,” according to the press release.

Niro’s wife, Nanette, was ANLC’s bookkeeper and was responsible for its financial records. The press release said the couple planned to avoid both corporate and individual income tax throughout the 2006 to 2010 tax years.

They deposited a large portion of ANLC’s receipts into “two non-interest-bearing checking accounts, and transferred money out the accounts to themselves for their benefit,” according to the United States Department of Justice press release.

The release also said the couple did not share that they had non-interest-bearing accounts to the tax return preparer when they filed their ANLC federal income tax returns. The Niro's failed to truthfully reflect monies received from ANLC and other sources in their 2006 through 2009 personal tax returns, according to the Tuesday press release.

It’s reported a 2010 tax return was not filed entirely.

“For the 2006 through 2010 tax years, Anthony and Nanette Niro failed to report to the IRS more than $7.8 million in income, resulting in a tax loss to the IRS of $1,451,725,” the presser explained.

The press release provided an example of how much money they lied about, “on their 2009 federal individual tax return, Anthony and Nanette Niro reported taxable income of $131,895 when their correct taxable income for that year was $1,891,955."

Officials did not say when Nanette is scheduled to be sentenced.
