Guida's 1% milk cartons found to have sanitizer in it: Connecticut Department of Agriculture

Customers with the affected product are asked to throw it out.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) launched an investigation after some milk cartons from a local dairy producer were found to be contaminated with diluted sanitizer.

Investigators said the incident involves Guida’s Dairy, based in New Britain, and it affects the 1% low-fat half-pint milk cartons with a sell-by date of APR 11.

VERIFY: No, ‘deltacron’ and the BA.2 subvariant of COVID-19 are not the same

After a preliminary investigation, officials found the issue is limited to milk within the time range of 4:30 and 7:30 and code stamped on the cartons. The milk has limited distribution in New Jersey. A chemical small is associated with the product, Guida's said in a statement.

"Nothing is more important than the well-being and health of those we serve. Once we were made aware of this issue, we took immediate action and tested impacted product to verify there is no food safety risk associated with this product," Guida's said.

Out of an abundance of caution, Guida's is asking all of its customers who purchased the product to dispose of it.

FOX29 in New Jersey reported Wednesday several students got sick after unknowingly drinking the affected milk. The New Jersey Department of Public Health has encouraged schools to remove the milk from circulation in their cafeterias.

"Based on hazmat test it turns out it tested positive for basically what it would be considered a non-toxic digestible sanitizer," said Dan Keashen, Camden County Director of Public Affairs. "There was something that went terribly wrong in the manufacturing process of this milk."

Guida’s Dairy is cooperating fully with CT DoAg regulatory officials.

"The quality of our products is deeply important to the Guida’s Dairy team. We are working with all appropriate regulatory agencies to make them aware of this issue and taking the necessary corrective actions," Guida's added.
