EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — The build is on at what is known as the "Burnside Hope Development." Just off Burnside Avenue in East Hartford, 10 new eco-friendly homes for 10 new families are taking shape across the 3.2-acre lot, and they are halfway through.
As hammers were swinging and saws were cutting, leaders from the East Hartford Community joined the brass from Habitat for Humanity of North Central Connecticut to honor some veteran volunteers just ahead of Veterans’ Day.
“A large percentage of our volunteers especially our crew leaders, and our contractors -- they served so today is about giving back to veterans and acknowledging their service,” said Karraine Moody, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of North Central Connecticut.
“Being honored as a veteran is great, to be recognized for the sacrifice and what our families sacrificed, it's appreciated,” said retired Army Colonel Mike Cabrey. The longtime volunteer helped install windows on the second floor of a four-bedroom home on the lot.
Chris McKelvie, the director of construction for Habitat of Humanity of North Central Connecticut, said his veteran volunteer force is strong: “Today is about honoring Veterans Day and the importance of honoring those who served our country and the many who serve our community in East Hartford.”
The eco-friendly homes are all scheduled for completion sometime next fall. Habitat for Humanity leaders’ best guess is that the houses will be ready to welcome new families by next October.
