HARTFORD, Conn. — Four Connecticut non-profits have received a total of $8 million in donations from Mackenzie Scott's philanthropy organization, Yield Giving. This is part of the $640 million to more than 360 small nonprofits that Scott donated to on Tuesday in YG's latest round of donations.
Each Connecticut organization received $2 million.
COMPASS Youth Collaborative in Hartford works with teens and young adults to prevent violence and help handle trauma.
Journey Home works to combat homelessness in the Hartford area.
Leadership, Education & Athletics in Partnership (LEAP) in New Haven teaches teens and young adults to become leaders and run programs to connect with "children living in neighborhoods that have historically experienced systemic disinvestment."
The Building One Community (B1C) in Stamford provides programs and resources for immigrants, from academic services to specialists assisting with job searches and legal services.
Last December, StayWell Health Center, which is primarily based out of Waterbury, received a $5 million donation from Scott, and has donated to over a dozen other Connecticut organizations since 2019.
Scott has given away $16.5 billion from the fortune she came into after divorcing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Initially, she publicized the gifts in online blog posts, sometimes naming the organizations and sometimes not. She launched a database of her giving in December 2022, under the name Yield Giving.
In an essay reflecting on the website, she wrote, “Information from other people – other givers, my team, the nonprofit teams I’ve been giving to – has been enormously helpful to me. If more information about these gifts can be helpful to anyone, I want to share it.”
