ELLINGTON, Conn — Two men were arrested for illegally siphoning used cooking oil from an Ellington restaurant on Tuesday, state police said.
The restaurant owner called the police when he saw two men with an unmarked white van using a hose to pump used oil into the back of the van, state police said.
When the men drove away, the owner stayed on the phone with the police and told them where the van went, according to police.
Police said they stopped the van getting onto Interstate 84 in Vernon. After investigating, the police identified the men as Jonat Gutierrez Rosario, 34, and Ronald Gutierrez-Sant, 29. The men said they were going home to New York, but would not answer questions about where they came from, according to police.
The police said they then called the business owner and he confirmed the men and van were the same he spotted behind his restaurant.
The men were detained while police investigated. Police said they found a large white oil tank in the back of the van which was about 30% full.
After finding the oil, the men were arrested. Both of the men were charged with three misdemeanors related to stealing someone’s personal property. Both were released on a $100,000 bond and were arraigned in court later Tuesday.
