HARTFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut State Police trooper was arrested for allegedly looking up a license plate in a state database while off-duty for personal reasons.
Jose Campos, 30, was arrested Tuesday for using the Connecticut Online Law Enforcement Telecommunications teleprocessing system (COLLECT) for personal reasons.
Two separate parallel investigations were launched after two women alleged Campos' misuse of COLLECT, and Tuesday's arrest was in one of those cases.
The arrest warrant alleges Campos used the COLLECT database to look up the plate of a vehicle his girlfriend at the time was driving. The woman told investigators that Campos told her he would run the license plate to see if the vehicle she was driving belonged to another man.
The investigation determined that the woman rented the vehicle using Turo, a rental car app, and Campos searched the vehicle's plate in COLLECT during the timeframe the woman was renting the vehicle. Campos was off-duty at the time he made the COLLECT inquiry, the arrest warrant states.
During training to use the COLLECT database, troopers are told to refrain from using the database for personal reasons or curiosity in all circumstances, the arrest warrant states.
Campos faces a computer crimes charge and he posted a $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 17.
Campos has been part of of Connecticut State Police since 2020. While on administrative leave, he most recently served in the Special Licensing and Firearms Unit. He was fully suspended with pay after his arrest.
