MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — A Cromwell mother faced a judge Friday morning for a series of charges.
One of them included allegedly drowning her baby in the Connecticut River in September.
Defense Attorney Jake Donovan called her a 'devoted mother,' but after that day in September, her mental health being called into question.
"The allegations that are reflected in the warrant are bizarre in nature," said Attorney Donovan.
Devoni Miller, 24, faced a slew of charges which included reckless endangerment, reckless driving, risk of injury to a child and much more.
The details surrounding her crime were called 'serious' by the judge.
According to the arrest warrant, on September 11 shortly before 6:30 in the evening, Miller allegedly hit a car on Main Street in Cromwell.
She then continued to Route 9 south exit 25 where she hit a second car.
It was not long before she sped off, hit a guardrail and ended up in an embankment that led to the CT River.
"These allegations were certainly out of character – completely out of character for her," added Attorney Donovan.
When police found Miller walking along Route 9 North, she was allegedly only wearing undergarments.
She then told officers her baby ran down to the water and said, "I'm not crazy, just a little depressed."
Rescue crews eventually found her baby dead on a pile of rocks, but Attorney Donovan said Miller was a nurse who loved her baby.
"Everyone I’ve spoken to would indicate she was completely devoted to her daughter. She was a CNA and an LPN. I believe that she earned a certificate from Lincoln Tech and was fully employed here in Cromwell," added Attorney Donovan.
The warrant went on to state family members noticed Miller's erratic and disinterested behavior and obsession with reading the bible while talking about "the other side."
Miller will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and be placed under suicide watch.
"It’s called a competency evaluation to see if she understands the nature of the charges against her and can assist counsel in her defense," added Attorney Donovan.
Miller was placed on a $1 million bond and is due back in court in February.
